The one most businesses miss

Some businesses pay 20% VAT on electricity. They should be paying 5%.

Under HMRC VAT Notice 701/19, the reduced 5% VAT rate applies to specific categories of business energy use. Many small UK businesses qualify but are billed 20% by default because the supplier never asked them to submit the VAT declaration form.

5%
Reduced VAT rate for qualifying businesses
Small usageBusinesses using under 33 kWh/day of electricity or 145 kWh/day of gas (the HMRC de minimis threshold) — small offices, shops, cafés, workshops.
Residential accommodationCare homes, hostels, children's homes, monasteries, student halls, and other qualifying residential settings.
CharitiesEnergy used by charities for non-business purposes qualifies for the reduced 5% rate.
Mixed-use premisesThe domestic portion of a business attached to a residence — for example a B&B, a pub with landlord accommodation, or a shop with a flat above.

What we check on every business energy audit:

1. Are you on the right VAT rate now? If you qualify for 5% but are paying 20%, you're overpaying every single month. We help you submit the VAT declaration to your supplier so future bills are corrected.

2. Can you reclaim historical overpayments? HMRC generally allows backdated VAT claims for up to 4 years. For an established business the recovery can run into tens of thousands of pounds.

3. Are you also exempt from CCL on the qualifying portion? Climate Change Levy doesn't apply to energy supplied at the reduced VAT rate. Same form, same evidence — two reductions on every kWh.

What this can mean in cash
A small business spending £1,000/month on electricity that should have been at 5% VAT — but has been paying 20% for the last 4 years — has overpaid roughly £7,200 in VAT alone. That's before we even look at your unit rate.

Frequently asked

Business owner questions.

Which businesses qualify for the 5% VAT rate on electricity?
Under HMRC VAT Notice 701/19, the reduced 5% VAT rate applies to:
1. Small-scale supplies below the de minimis threshold — under 33 kWh/day of electricity or 145 kWh/day of gas, on average.
2. Energy used in qualifying residential accommodation (care homes, hostels, children's homes, monasteries, student halls).
3. Energy used by charities for non-business purposes.
4. The domestic portion of mixed-use premises such as B&Bs or businesses attached to a residence.
Many small UK businesses qualify but pay 20% because the supplier never asked them to submit the VAT declaration form.
How does business energy contract renewal work?
Business energy contracts don't auto-terminate — they roll onto out-of-contract or "deemed" rates that are typically 2-3× the market price if you don't renew before the end date. Some suppliers require 30 days' written notice; miss it and you can be locked into another fixed term at higher rates.
We check your contract dates, market position, and either renew with your current supplier at a competitive rate or move you to a better one.
Can I reclaim historical VAT overpayments?
Often yes. If you've been paying 20% when you qualified for 5%, HMRC generally allows backdated claims for up to 4 years. We identify whether reclaim applies and support the documentation. Recoveries typically range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of pounds depending on how long you've been overpaying.
Is Switchgrid a regulated energy supplier?
No. Switchgrid is a trading name of TulipTech Ltd and works in partnership with Assured Energy, a specialist UK business energy consultancy. We compare 30+ UK suppliers on your behalf and only recommend a switch when it saves you money. You pay nothing — we're paid by the supplier when a switch happens.
How long does the audit take?
Send us a recent bill (photo or PDF is fine). Within 24-48 working hours we send a plain-English breakdown of your rate vs the market, your renewal window, VAT eligibility, and what you could save. No obligation to switch.
What happens on switching day?
Nothing physical changes. Your gas and electricity supply is untouched — the pipes and wires are the same. Only the company sending you the bill changes. No engineer visit, no interruption, no downtime.
Do you cover water as well as gas and electricity?
Yes. Water deregulation in England means business customers can choose their water retailer (the company that bills you). We compare UK water retailers alongside energy suppliers in every audit.
